Who should attend The workshop is ideal for biologists who would like to learn state-of-the-art methods in coding and data analysis. Participants can be students (both undergraduates and postgraduates) or professionals from academia/industry. Participation is open to individuals from across the world. Prior knowledge of programming is not required. Participants must have a strong desire to learn new things.
Expectations from the participants The workshop would involve a rigorous one-month training; and participants are expected to sincerely dedicate time and effort for effective learning. Participants would be required to devote about twice the time of each live sessions in pre- and post- session assignment. For example, for each hour of live session the participants are expected to dedicate two hours in pre-readings, assignments, etc. The participants are also expected to engage in productive discussion during the live sessions.

  • Introduction to Python
  • Installation and setup, using interactive development environments (IDEs), data types and data structures, loops and conditionals, file handling.
2nd
  • Introduction to BioPython
  • Working with sequences and alignments, programmatic access to NCBI resources, motifs and weblogo, parsing structure data (pdb files), analysis and visualization of Phylogenetic trees.
3rd
  • Introduction to Pandas and Matplotlib
  • Introduction to data science concepts, working with dataframes, advanced graphical visualization techniques.
4th
  • Introduction to scikit-learn
  • Fundamentals of machine learning, supervised and unsupervised learning using biological data.
